How does a user operate a lock in public mode?

The locker sits unlocked and available. The user picks any free unit, presents a card or enters a self-chosen code, and the lock closes. It reopens only for that same credential. When the user unlocks it, the unit is released, and the credential is cleared, so the next user can take it. This is exactly the flow people expect in a gym or an airport.
